Sustainability Tips

Find out how you can help protect our environment as part of your move.

Sustainable Packing Tips

  • Declutter before packing - reduce the number of boxes and wrapping you need by only moving things you'll want in your new home.
  • Use soft items you already have for 'stuffing' in your boxes instead of extra packing paper - tea towels, oven gloves, towels, blankets etc. make great filler items for loose spaces to stop fragile items moving around.
  • Ask your mover about second-hand moving cartons - many moving companies will have a stock of boxes that are still in great condition and suitable for your move but may have been used once before.
  • Pack carefully - extra care taken in minimising damage reduces the waste of having to replace anything that may get damaged through poor packing.
  • Label efficiently - careful and clear labelling will prevent un-necessary unpacking and repackaging.
  • Setup recycling areas when you're unpacking and separate materials as you go to make these quick and easy to recycle.

Reducing Waste

  • Plan meals carefully in the run-up to your move - use up your existing food, particularly fridge/freezer food that wouldn't survive the journey.
  • Keep your reusable travel cups handy for moving day (to be packed last or carried with you) to avoid needing disposables.
  • Pack a lunch and snacks for moving day to reduce the need for take-out/delivery (or make sure to recycle packaging if you do!).

Unwanted Items

If there are items you won't be moving with you try to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • Sell items that still have usable life on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Vinted or at a Bootfair.
  • Donate items that no longer have value to charities, shelters, community organisations or to others in your local area. There are some great online 'freecycle' groups on facebook, the Next Door app and other social media platforms.
  • Recycle responsibly - check your local council's waste and recycling website to find out the safe way to recycle any items that need to be thrown away - especially if they are electronic or hazardous and require special treatment.

Carbon Offsetting

Some movers offer a carbon offsetting option where for a small fee you will be able to pay for carbon credits that will fund re-forestation or similar environmental projects that aim to reduce, remove or avoid emissions elsewhere.
