Success Stories

Piano Logistics for Film & TV

When the BBC began filming the period drama Mapp and Lucia in Rye, they required multiple grand piano moves between local piano technicians and sets including Lamb House – a historic National Trust property. The piano movement needed to be discreet, damage-free, and highly flexible to accommodate unpredictable filming schedules. Access was especially complex due to the cobbled streets and fragile nature of the site.

Solution: A dedicated project manager was appointed as a single point of contact for the BBC team, ensuring clear communication and responsive coordination. Expert piano technicians handled each move, using protective materials, ramps, and piano-specific gear such as “piano shoes” and custom straps. Air ride suspension vehicles were employed to provide shock-free transport. The team also laid temporary pathways across grass to protect the grounds of Lamb House. With schedule changes happening often, the logistics team remained agile throughout, adapting on short notice to avoid disruption to filming.

The BBC required our team to remain on-site across multiple days for repositioning and set-up. In a fun and unexpected twist, some of our crew were even dressed in period costume and cast as extras for a scene involving piano movement, ensuring authenticity on screen and safety on set.

wurlitzer

A Century in Motion – Relocating the Rye Wurlitzer

The project centered around a remarkable piece of musical history: a 100-year-old Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. Originally installed in the Palace Cinema, Tottenham, the organ was first relocated by Bournes in the 1950s to Rye Grammar School, where it was positioned on the hall’s balcony. Over 50 years later, Bournes was again entrusted to move it - this time from the balcony to a more accessible and prominent home on the stage at Rye College.

While the initial relocation supported performance use, the Wurlitzer has since become a cherished feature in its own right. It now anchors regular public performances and has inspired the creation of a dedicated academy teaching young musicians to master this iconic instrument.

Solution

The move drew on both history and ingenuity. The original 1950s relocation required transporting the instrument across two vehicles, then lifting it 15 feet up to the balcony using a manually built ramp of boxes and planks. At the time, the crew worked without modern lifting equipment, relying on experience and careful planning.

When asked to reverse the process five decades later, the team assessed the options and returned to those original principles. With the access points still unsuitable for machinery, they again used a carefully prepared ramp and manual handling to lower the 250–300 kg console to the floor before lifting it onto the stage. The move was a rare fusion of heritage techniques and modern-day care, with the same dedication to safety and respect for the instrument’s legacy.

Piano Moving FAQ

What training do your Piano Handlers have?

Our piano handlers are trained in-house, meaning they have custom experience that goes far beyond general household goods moving. This specialised training ensures they have a deep understanding of the intricate nature of piano transportation, from grand pianos to uprights. They're adept at handling the delicate internal mechanisms, precise weight distribution, and unique structural components of each instrument, guaranteeing your piano is moved with the utmost care and expertise.

Is my piano insured during the move?

Yes, we are able to provide you with a bespoke insurance quotation tailored to the value of your piano.

Can you move grand or baby grand pianos?

Yes, we can relocate a wide range of pianos and musical instruments - from baby grands and uprights to Wurlitzer performance organs!

What if my piano needs to go up or down stairs?

This is a very common question, and rest assured, navigating stairs with a piano is a core part of our specialised service. It's where our expertise truly shines!

Here's how we handle your piano on stairs:

  • Expert Assessment & Planning: Before the move, we'll either conduct an in person assessment or ask you for the piano details (such as make/model/serial number ) and a description (and ideally photos/video) of your staircase, including the number of steps, width, type (straight, turning, spiral), and any landings or tight turns. This allows our team to plan the safest and most efficient route.

  • Specialised Equipment & Techniques: We don't just "lift and carry." Our teams are equipped with purpose-built tools:
    • Reinforced Piano Transport Shoes: Your piano is securely fastened to these custom made pieces of equipment, allowing us to navigate and control any descent/ascent with precision.
    • Heavy-Duty Straps & Harnesses: For optimal grip and to distribute the piano's weight safely among our crew.
    • Stair-Climbing Dollies/Machines: For particularly heavy instruments or challenging staircases, we utilise specialised mechanical assistance to ensure smooth, controlled movement and minimise strain.
    • Travel covers: We meticulously cover your piano with high quality heavy duty covers specifically designed for your piano size, weather you have an upright or Grand Piano.
  • Highly Trained & Coordinated Teams: Our crews are experienced professionals who specialise in piano handling. They work in precise coordination, communicating constantly to ensure every movement is deliberate and safe.

  • Transparent Pricing: As stair work significantly increases the complexity and manpower required, there is an additional charge for stairs. This will be clearly outlined in your personalised quote based on the details you provide.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?

Yes, almost certainly. Even with the most careful handling, changes in temperature, humidity, and vibrations during transit can affect a piano's tuning. It's recommended to wait a few weeks after the move to allow the piano to acclimate to its new environment before having it professionally tuned.

Can you store my piano if needed?

Yes, our bespoke piano storage facilities offer secure long or short term storage options.

Do you move pianos internationally?

Yes – if you’re a manufacturer looking to deliver pianos overseas, a restorer with a long distance customer, a school, college, music shop or even arranging a concert tour our expert piano handling services can help deliver it safely and on time. We will coordinate with customs, crating specialists, and international freight forwarders as well as advise on packaging requirements, customs documentation, and transit times.

What equipment do you use to safely move my piano?

During our initial assessment we'll plan for the right equipment and resources to safely move your instrument. This may include:

  • Reinforced Piano Transport Shoes
  • Piano skids/boards: These are specialised dollies designed to support the piano's weight evenly.
  • Transport Covers/blankets: To protect the piano from scratches and bumps.
  • Secure straps: To secure the piano to the skid and in the moving vehicle.
  • Tail lifts and Ramps: For loading and unloading from trucks.
  • Specialised dollies: For navigating different types of surfaces.

How far in advance do I need to book piano relocation services?

Ideally, we need at least one week to allow a comprehensive assessment and move plan; however, for simpler projects, we can support shorter notice moves.
