Introducing the Family Relocation Risk Assessment Tool

Posted by By Bournes Relocation Solutions - June 30, 2025

Moving for an international assignment is often an exciting and welcome opportunity for many families, yet it can present significant challenges and concerns. We know that a happy family is frequently the secret to a successful assignment, as family dissatisfaction is the number 2 reason for international assignment failure.

FAMILY RELOCATION RISK ASSESSMENT

We understand the complexities involved in global mobility. Bournes has joined together with Expat Valley and our colleagues across the Harmony Relocation Network to work on providing a collection of resources, tools and enhanced services globally to help International families thrive and we're excited to introduce the latest tool - the Expat Valley Family Relocation Risk Assessment!

This tool was developed in response to requests from global mobility and other corporate professionals involved in global workforce management, who sought a quick assessment tool for family relocation risks.

Proactive Risk Identification for Successful Assignments

The Family Relocation Risk Assessment is specifically designed to help Global Mobility professionals proactively identify potential challenges for relocating spouses and children. It achieves this by assessing both family-related and assignment-related risk factors.

The tool allows you to:

  • Identify potential risks early: By using this tool, you can increase your awareness of factors that may negatively impact assignment success.

  • Facilitate expectation management: Early identification of risks allows for open discussions and realistic expectation setting with the assignee and their family.

  • Enable risk mitigation: Once risks are identified, you can consider what resources (such as benefits, service providers, or Employee Resource Groups) are available to help mitigate them. It's also crucial to inform relevant stakeholders like managers and HR colleagues of the identified risks.

It is recommended that you complete this Family Relocation Risk Assessment together with the assignee and their partner, for example, during the Assignment Briefing. For each factor, you'll indicate the answer that best describes the international assignment conditions and/or family situation.
