Bournes team complete HGV Driver Apprenticeships

Posted by By Bournes Moves - February 9, 2021

We are proud to announce that 2 Bournes employees, Aaron Craig and Charlie Birnie have completed their HGV Driver Apprenticeships and have now moved into full time Removals Driver roles at Bournes.

Aaron successfully completed his driver apprenticeship

Bournes partnered with TRS Training Ltd, affiliates of the BAR and RHA, to provide opportunities for our team to develop their skills and build their career as a professional Removals Driver.

There has been an ongoing Driver Shortage in the UK for a number of years which has meant supporting career development in these types of role is more important than ever. The TRS scheme was specifically targeted at the Removals Industry with step by step comprehensive learning over and above the typical one week intensive driving course helping to improve all round competence of successful participants.

The programme was championed by HR Director Caroline Hilton, supported by Operations Director Thomas Emanuel and the senior management and operations teams.

What did the Driver Apprenticeship Scheme involve?

The apprenticeship scheme was advertised to all Bournes personnel and 3 successful applicants were enrolled initially onto the scheme.

Eligible applicants followed a 12 month structured training plan including Maths and English, LGV theory, CPC modules 2&4 as well as lessons covering knowledge, skills and behaviours, mentoring, acquisition of licence and an end point assessment. 20% of the course time was also spent shadowing a skilled driver, providing our experienced drivers the opportunity to mentor the apprentices.

The Apprentices had regular one-to-one sessions with their TRS trainer and reviews with our own Transport Manager.

Was the Driver Apprenticeship scheme successful?

Yes! 2 of 3 trainees have now obtained their HGV2 Licenses and have been promoted into Driver positions at Bournes, with the final participant due to take his final test soon.

Caroline Hilton, HR Director said:

“We are very proud of the Apprentices determination and commitment and delighted that this has given them the opportunity they were seeking, to become professional drivers.

"These new Drivers know the removals profession well, know Bournes and what it stands for, and can now utilise their skills to a far greater degree than before. They are hugely valuable members of our team".

For our employees this provides a fully funded professional qualification that they can use throughout their career, as well as an increase in earnings from promotion into an official driver role on completion of the course. These new skills help participants to improve their all round knowledge, skills and teamworking ability to put them in a great position to build long term, fulfilling careers in the removals industry including advanced driving and leadership roles. One of the successful participants has already expressed interest in progressing to HGV1 driver once they have gained further experience.

We believe strongly in investing in our people and hope that the achievements of these employees will motivate others to follow in their footsteps in progressing within this specialist career.
