Using management data for Employee Relocation

Posted by By Kirsty Parsons - November 19, 2014

Everyone is talking about Data and how powerful it can be; here we look at why and how we can use management data for Employee Relocation

In a recent article in the Harvard Business Review entitled “Big Data: The Management Revolution” Andrew McAffee and Erik Brynjolfsson discuss the recent explosion in digital data: “You can’t manage what you don’t measure - There’s much wisdom in that saying, and it explains why the recent explosion of digital data is so important. Simply put, because of big data, managers can measure, and hence know, radically more about their businesses, and directly translate that knowledge into improved decision making and performance.”

This is part of the reason why Bournes Relocation Solutions and UniGroup Relocation Network invest heavily in industry leading Redsky Mobility software, which has been developed by industry experts and is exclusive to the UniGroup Relocation Network.

Redsky not only gives service providers in the relocation process a platform to manage their activities but also provides a wide range of tools for transferees and their Global Mobility managers to access information (including documentation and tracking information) facilitate better communication and manage their own tasks.

As well as allowing UniGroup Relocation Network to be high quality service providers by managing relocations and handling sales and operations more efficiently and effectively RedSky has a powerful weapon that helps us be a key partner too….its Management Information.

Behind slick user friendly screens and customer facing web portals Redsky allows all departments from Sales and Marketing to Operations and Coordination through to Finance and HR to record every little detail about their activities, and every field entered into the system can be reported on using custom reporting or more complex SQL data extracts and analysis, meaning essentially everything can now be measured.

Not only does the Management Information we can pull from Redsky help us to improve our own business and services to clients, but we can also pass this benefit on to our corporate account clients to help meet their goals by providing detailed and comprehensive data to allow for planning, reporting and benchmarking.

Using data to make smarter decisions

In their article McAffee and Brynjolfsson go on to add “We can make better predictions and smarter decisions. We can target more-effective interventions, and can do so in areas that so far have been dominated by gut and intuition rather than by data and rigor”.

Redsky allows our customers to use real data to identify patterns and make predictions to help them plan and forecast, for instance the data can help inform policy (for example we can measure the average volume of transferees in a specific assignment group to advise the client in setting allowances or provide a list of the most commonly requested exceptions to policy for review on their inclusion) and can also help to plan resource requirements by identifying patterns (such as number of relocations to given destinations across the year). Put simply, if we record the item of data, we can report and analyse it.

Why is this important?

This is all very nice to have, it makes our customer’s lives easier and their decisions more effective, but the sweetener in the article for me was the proof that actually using this data to drive decisions improves productivity and profitability. Research commissioned by McAffee and Brynjolfsson found:

“Companies in the top third of their industry in the use of data-driven decision making were, on average, 5% more productive and 6% more profitable than their competitors”.

UniGroup Relocation Network is more than just a Relocation Service provider, we aim to be a partner, to be part of your team, helping you make your company more successful, and that’s why we invest heavily in systems like Redsky that provide you with the Management Information you need to thrive. Redsky is also highly customisable meaning that most aspects can be tailored to an individual client’s needs, including reporting. Not only can we report but we can use our experience to help you analyse and understand the data to drive your decisions.

The beauty of Redsky, versus many other products on the market used for Move Management, is that it’s growing and evolving –it’s a living system and a constant work in progress. The team behind Redsky brings together industry experts who know the relocation industry inside out and IT and process experts from outside of the industry to cast a fresh eye on historic methods to make sure that the resulting product is the best it can be. In addition a global development forum made up of users on the ground from across various user functions regularly contributes to the development schedule, providing user and customer feedback, suggesting improvements, changes and additions to ensure Redsky constantly improves not only to meet today’s needs but to be ready for tomorrow’s and to help UniGroup Relocation Network and its clients lead the way in the future of relocation.
