Posted by By Kirsty Parsons - November 19, 2014

Cream Lake, Vancouver resizedImmersing yourself in the local cultural activities in Vancouver is easily one of the best - not to mention most enjoyable - ways of learning to love the city. And this is one city that doesn't disappoint - whether it be art, theatre, film or music, there’s always something going on where entertainment is concerned...

1. Film & Theatre: Home to some of the biggest film production centres in North America, Vancouver is often referred to by those in the industry as Hollywood North. The Vancouver International Film Festival, which runs for two weeks every September, celebrates the city’s connection with film and shows over 350 new pictures.
For a theatre fix, check out the Arts Club Theatre company on Granville Island and Bard on the Beach. There are a number of other smaller companies worth visiting, with Theatre Under the Stars particularly recommended for atmospheric outdoor performances in the summer.

2. Art: If art and history are your kind of things then there are several places worth visiting. The Vancouver Art Gallery has a permanent collection of nearly 10,000 items, while over in Downtown there’s the Contemporary Art Gallery, which showcases a number of temporary exhibitions by new artists throughout the year.
Museums of interest include the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Kitsilano, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and the Vancouver Museum For a more interactive experience, check out the Science Museum at False Creek.

3. Music: Another diverse are of entertainment, Vancouver offers something to appease every musical taste. Whether you like classical, folk or popular music there are concerts held throughout the city constantly. Fans of classical in particular might like to check out the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, or even perhaps attend a performance by the Vancouver Opera.

4. Nightlife: Vancouver by night is just as busy as Vancouver by day. And there’s no end of options for a night out. Whether you want to dine in style, sip cocktails at sundown or dance until dawn, there are literally hundreds of places to enjoy a good night out across the city. The Granville Entertainment District is by far the most popular outlet for bars and nightclubs, many of which stay open until 3am. Gastown is also popular, with lots of trendy, upscale restaurants and nightclubs.
